It is a hybrid of old red sprout varieties and newer green ones, taking the best of both to deliver a mild and slightly sweeter flavour, according to high-end grocers, Waitrose.
The red sprouts, which are purple on the stalk, yet turn red once cooked, will be available in stores across the country from this week.
They have been developed by Staples Vegetable Ltd, a third-generation family farming business with more than 15,000 acres of farmland, spread predominantly across Lincolnshire and the Isle of Wight.
Staples grow enough sprouts for Waitrose to spread out over 855 miles and during the sprout season, the retailer will sell approximately 15 different specially selected varieties, to suit all tastes.
“The sprout divides opinion in the taste stakes. However, to ensure your red sprouts taste as good as they look, don’t overcook them,” said Paul Bidwell, sprout buyer at Waitrose.
“Not just for Christmas, they’re great in stir fries, grated in winter salads or are a novel addition to a quiche.”
The Redarling sprouts are high in fibre and are a good source of Vitamin K and folic acid. They are priced at £1.40 per pack.
