Aldi is pouring some £90 million into 100 of its supermarkets in the UK to make them more consumer friendly.

In addition to increasing the amount of space its shoppers will have to navigate aisles in stores, Aldi is upgrading them with “energy efficient technology” which includes new doors on refrigerators and adding natural refrigerants to cut down on carbon emissions.

Thirty of Aldi’s supermarkets will see the changes happen by the end of summer.

“We’re committed to making sure that the shopping experience is on a par with the high-quality products and service we offer,” says Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK. “Finding ways to reduce any environmental impact as we continue to grow our store estate across the country is also a vital part of these changes.”

In its release, Aldi noted the necessity of making the changes, saying that its rapidly expanding customer base – which has outpaced all other UK retailers over the past year – is prompting the improvements.

Aldi’s footprints are much smaller than most of its competitors, so it must maximize floor space and provide better signage. Redesigns will be occurring throughout the end of the year.
