According to new research from discount supermarket chain Aldi, parents in the UK spend a whopping £100 per child in their preparations for the school year. Nearly three-quarters of them say they are worried about their budgets and affordability.

To help offset those costs, Aldi has launched a Back-to-School Fund campaign that includes £100 Aldi vouchers each month for 100 selected families so they can purchase everyday essentials. Aldi is also giving £20,000 to local causes, schools and nurseries through Neighbourly to provide a further assist.

“We know the back-to-school period can be a real pinch point for family finances, especially after having to contend with keeping the kids entertained during the summer school holidays,” says Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK. “As the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket, we’re committed to doing whatever we can to support parents in making their money go further and that’s why we’re giving parents an extra helping hand.”

Parents can apply for the vouchers through the end of September and if selected, would receive a nice boost that truly goes a long way at Aldi. Families almost get a double bonus by being able to spend it at a supermarket with the lowest prices per average shop in the UK.

Most families need it. On the low end, they spend about £23 per week on packed lunches. They spend another £90 on after school clubs or extra-curricular activities. That doesn’t leave much room in the purses for parents for other things.

But those vouchers and the work of charities that promote and deliver fresh, healthy food can bridge those gaps and keep children thriving and enjoying school and peer groups.

“We support many thousands of good causes across the UK that directly support families, and this additional funding from Aldi will provide a vital lifeline for them to cover the cost of essentials for the parents and children who need it most,” Steve Butterworth, Neighbourly CEO, says.
