The Shambles Market in York, which has been a historic venue for some of the best local fruits and veg for hundreds of years, will be fully reopened on June 15, according to reports.
Many traders have been operating at the market during recent weeks as restrictions are easing across for shops and markets across the UK.
The York Press reports that Shambles is planning to have a one-way system to preserve the safety of shoppers and a re-configuration of the layout of the stalls to improve the flow of customers and minimise disruption. The market is also installing signage and barriers to ensure social distancing.
Shambles Market features 70 stalls for traders peddling a variety of wares, from food items to other goods. It is located next to the medieval Shambles thoroughfare – a narrow cobbled street of 15th Century timbered buildings that has been voted the most picturesque street in Britain. It is undergone several improvements since the 1960s and is open seven days a week.
Among its food offerings are its Flavours of the world, with street food, including North African & Levantine cuisine, Turkish-inspired wraps and traditional English fare. It also boasts Yorkshire-sourced soft fruits, including strawberries and raspberries and a Farmers Market on the last Friday of every month.
Some of its more prominent food traders include: Harrisons Fruit and Veg, which serve up home grown tomatoes and salads to Crown Prince Squash and winter greens; Gordon and Jane – Fruit and Vegetables, which feature fresh peas in the summer to root vegetables; and Mannion’s Fruit and Vegetables, which sell a wide range of soft fruits, peaches and English cherries in summer months.
