In a trial launched in 77 of its supermarkets, Sainsbury’s has removed plastic from its own-brand twin pack avocado packaging in favour of a new paper sack.
The retailer say the move will spare more than 20.2 million pieces of plastic annually once it is fully rolled out. The new packaging will feature bamboo netting and will be completely recyclable.
“Switching to paper packaging across our Ripe & Ready Avocados twin pack is one of the many steps we are taking to fulfill our commitment towards a greener future,” says Claire Hughes, Director of Product and Innovation. “The initiative reflects our continuous efforts to help develop more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions, and we’re excited for our customers to try out the new packaging in-store”.
The twin pack is selling for just £1.65, with Nectar shoppers receiving an additional 30p off.
As retailers across the UK are positioning own brands to be more sustainable, Sainsbury’s is doing its part to help.
The supermarket chain replaced plastic on its Taste the Difference berries and cherries range with cardboard and also went to cardboard on its mushroom punnets. Those two moves alone are expected to eliminate more than 950 tonnes of plastic being processed and used each year.
Sainsbury’s also has been trying to increase awareness on these initiatives with consumers thanks to its new ‘Good to Know’ logo on items that have less plastic.
