British retailers Tesco and Sainsbury’s are two of the Most Trustworthy Companies in the world, according to a survey done of customers, investors and employees done jointly by Newsweek magazine and Statista.

Several other UK food and drink companies were among the 1,000 business honoured by the publication, which received more than 230,000 evaluations from 70,000 participants across 20 countries and two dozen industries.

Among the criteria for consideration were whether companies treated employees fairly, whether they built awareness through “social listening” and whether their communications and advertisements could be trusted.

“This list recognizes companies that have earned the confidence of consumers, investors and employees by producing quality products, paying employees fair wages and appointing effective leaders,” Nancy Cooper, Newsweek Global Editor in Chief, wrote in the release. “Trust is on the decline across various industries, with concerns about data privacy, the use of AI and lack of marketing transparency emerging in the fast-paced global economy. With these growing concerns, trust is more valuable than ever.”

UK companies who were honoured in the Food & Beverage category were Greggs, Hilton Foods, Associated British Foods, Diageo, Britvic and Premier Foods. One notable international fresh produce company recognised was Fresh Del Monte.

Sainsbury’s and Tesco were in elite company among retailers, which also included internationals Ahold Delhaize (Netherlands) and Kroger (United States).
