The powerful lobbying organisation Veg Power has unleashed another new campaign aimed at consumers to entice them to eat more produce which focusses on seasonality of fresh produce.
Each month, Veg Power plans to feature a vegetable that is in season on its website and on social media with the help of influencers. For example, #SeasonalVeg might highlight green beans in October or beetroot in November. They are hoping “eating with the seasons” can be an effective way to get UK families to boost their veg intake.
“‘Eating with the seasons’ will also provide other benefits to the UK, including improvements in dietary and planetary health and support the last government’s findings that fresh produce are a key growth sector for the UK – helping to boost our food security,” says Dan Parker, chief executive at Veg Power. “We’re excited to get people munching on all types of seasonal veg and grateful for the support we have received this far.”
The support for Veg Power, the organisation behind so many healthy campaigns including Eat Them to Defeat Them, has been immensely widespread, led by Seasonal Veg Ambassador Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. The latest initiative also will be getting a lift from major influencers including double-Michelin Star chef Tom Aikens, Shivi Ramoutar, Suzanne Mulholland, Irini Tzortzoglou, Nessie Welschinger, Niki Webster, Chantelle Nicholson, Bettina Campolucci Bordi and nutritionists Charlotte Radcliffe and Zoe Griffiths.
Their message is simple: UK families and children need to be eating more veg for overall health and nutrition, and that it’s not as difficult or as expensive as it might seem.
“Domestically-produced in-season vegetables are generally cheaper, tastier, fresher and last longer. They are almost universally kinder to the environment and, of course, they support UK farming and our rural communities,” Fearnley-Whittingstall says. “I’m delighted to be supporting this campaign and would like to encourage as many people to join us by spreading the word about the benefits of seasonal veg, sharing content on social media and giving seasonal veg a try.”
Those interested in helping Veg Power spread the word can share content and the #SeasonalVeg hashtag on social media channels. In addition, they can go to Veg Power’s ‘Simply Veg’ website to find tips on preparation to ensure veg are served fresh.
